Prepare for Your Birth! Learn...
"Knowledge is power", right!? And there is so much to learn when you're having a baby! I want to help you get the information you need to make the decisions that are best for your family. These classes are for any woman giving birth - those that want natural births and those who want epidural births!
I open registration first to those on my wait list!
Do I really need to take a class? How much is there to learn about birth?
Do you know what the stages of labor are and what hormones are at play? When ACOG & evidence is saying women should be admitted into the hospital (& when it carries more risks than benefits)? The routine procedures at your birth place and the evidence for or against them? How to manage the pain? What will physically happen to and around you (or your partner) before, during, and after birth? What it means when your care provider says 6 cm, 80%, -2? How to nurse your baby after birth? In the past, women learned what they needed to know from the women in their family & community. But with modern obstetrics, we've lost this element of birth preparation - I try to fill that gap in our culture with this class!
I would like have a natural birth without pain medications. Will this class prepare me for that?
I will fill your "tool kit" with lots of comfort measures. You will learn breathing strategies, relaxation, and labor & birth positions. And we'll talk about how you can use options such as water, aromatherapy, birth balls, rebozo, and music. We'll also talk about the choices you make and how that might affect a natural birth. (I have personally given birth naturally 4 times and most of the births I attend as a doula are by women who desire natural births. So, natural birth is where I have the most experience.)
Can't I just do everything the doctors and nurses tell me to do?
Some hospitals can be 15-20 years behind the research and there can be a lot of pressure to conform to the hospital's traditions and routines - traditions and routines that you may or may not choose if you understood the evidence and were given a choice. In this class, I'll give you evidence based information to help you make your decision. And we'll cover how to respectfully advocate for yourself, your partner, & your new baby.
How does this class prepare my partner?
Your partner will learn what your body is doing during labor & birth, what the options are along with their risks & benefits, how to support and comfort you during labor, and how to advocate for you!
Will this class be helpful if I want an epidural?
Most of my experience as a teacher and doula is preparing women for natural birth. However, I attend and am supportive of women choosing epidural births as well! And I am grateful for epidurals as an option. It is still helpful to be educated about birth even if you have an epidural. Getting an epidural doesn't eliminate the challenges of birth, it just changes what those challenges may be. Also, 1 out of 5 women do not get adequate relief from them. In this class we will talk about how an epidural is given, what challenges you might face with an epidural, and how to manage labor before & during an epidural using comfort tools and epidural friendly positions.
