What clients are saying...

Though this was my fifth pregnancy, this was the first time I had used a doula.  Laura was such a great asset during my labor, I wonder now why I had never done this before!  Laura was so good at communicating with me ahead of time and helping me make a birth plan.  With all that in place, when delivery came, I knew what to expect.  She was the calming presence I needed in the "storm."  I would recommend Laura's professionalism and skill to any of my friends!  ~ Bing

She was amazingly supportive and was my voice when I couldn't speak.  This was my third child and the first time I used a birth support person.  I'm so glad I did!  This is what Laura was made for!  ~ Third Time Mama

She counseled my wife and I through our first pregnancy, labor/delivery, and postpartum. Laura was a tremendous help in educating us on the process of bringing a child into the world. Her coach meetings were formative in our understanding, and helped us to have clarity approaching our due date. Laura informed us in an unbiased way that helped us understand all that could happen in labor & delivery. This proved to be vital for our specific situation as things did not progress as we hoped and my wife had to have a Cesarean section performed after two full days of labor. Laura was also a consistent support inside the room that helped keep us mentally, emotionally, and spiritually healthy. She certainly has a gift that is matched by her passion for birth education.  ... to be in the room with us was sooooo valuable!  ~ Kyle

Evidence on Continuous Support in Labor

Evidence Based Birth® published an article, Evidence on: Doulas, where it looks at the evidence of continuous (always by your side!) support during labor and birth, and specifically at doula care.  It found that all types of continuous support benefit mom, dad, and baby (with no risks!), and that there was a larger affect on certain outcomes when that support was provided by a doula.  Findings from the article:

  • 25% decrease in the risk of Cesarean; the largest effect was seen with a doula (39% decrease)*
  • 8% increase in the likelihood of a spontaneous vaginal birth; the largest effect was seen with a doula (15% increase)*
  • 10% decrease in the use of any medications for pain relief; the type of person providing continuous support did not make a difference
  • Shorter labors by 41 minutes on average; there is no data on if the type of person providing continuous support makes a difference
  • 38% decrease in the baby’s risk of a low five minute Apgar score; there is no data on if the type of person providing continuous support makes a difference
  • 31% decrease in the risk of being dissatisfied with the birth experience; mothers’ risk of being dissatisfied with the birth experience was reduced with continuous support provided by a doula or someone in their social network (family or friend), but not hospital staff
